2012 Durango Silverton Train and Fall Scenery Field Trip
September 28, 29 and 30, 2012
Due to the popularity of the Durango-Silverton train rides during the peak fall foliage everyone should reserve their train trip for Saturday, September 29 as soon as possible.
All of the normal travel hotels are present in Durango so be sure to make your reservations as soon as you can. Here is a link to get you started. http://goo.gl/maps/HeU4K
Friday September 28
6:30 p.m. Meet for dinner this evening at Randy’s Restaurant Durango Colorado. We will discuss the order of the day for our Saturday train ride and Sunday car trip to Molas Pass for photography of the autumn scenery and the train as it passes through the Animas River valley.
Saturday, September 29
8:00 a.m. The group will congregate at the Train station in Durango at 8:00 a.m. to board the train that departs at 8:30 a.m. Here is a link that shows the train station http://goo.gl/maps/qW7pM
We will ride the train to and from Silverton, so make your ticket reservations accordingly at this site http://www.durangotrain.com/ride-us or call 1-888-872-4607 for reservations. There are a variety of car classes available, but the open top gondola cars will be best for photography. I was assured by the staff of the train that nowadays there is a minimal amount of cinders emitted from the locomotive, so we would be safe in the open cars.
A helpful hint from previous travelers on the train is to reserve seats on the right side of the train.
Please make your reservation as soon as possible as seating in the open gondola cars is from the back towards the front and the back would still be better. The front of the cars is of course closer to the locomotive so the chance of cinders is apparently not nil.
Once the train arrives in Silverton we will find a place for lunch and photograph this interesting old mining town.
The return train to Durango leaves the station at 2:15 p.m. We will meet for dinner Saturday evening at a restaurant to be determined later.
Sunday, September 30
8:00 a.m. Meet at the train station to organize out trip to shoot the train along the Animas River. We will shoot the train as it moves through the Animas River Valley and before it enters the canyon we passed through the day before.
After the train passes we will drive to Molas pass using Forest Road 591 and shoot at little Molas lake stopping for scenery shots along the way. Forest road 591 is an improved and graded dirt road, but passable easily in good weather by all vehicles.
We will go to Silverton after shooting the scenery at Molas pass and lake to photograph the train as it comes out of the Animas River canyon at approximately 11:30 a.m.
Following lunch in Silverton we will return to Albuquerque on your chosen routes.
