Speaker's Meeting

Speaker: Jessica Lozoya

Topic: The Life and Photography of Oscar Lozoya

Find out about the life and fine art photography of Albuquerque’s internationally acclaimed photographer Oscar Lozoya. Presented by his wife and partner for 20 years, Jessica Lozoya will offer a glimpse into Oscar’s journey from immigrating legally to the US with his family at the age of 3, to his life’s work of creating fine art images inspired by his Mexican/Chicano cultural. In between he was a professional drummer, designed and managed the building of water pipes, and part owner/operator of Lozoya Welding with his older brother.

Oscar’s photography work has been highly awarded for both superior technique and his distinct artistic style. While his earlier color work did well in photographic competition, it was when he started printing his own black and white images that his work really took off. At that point Oscar was able to control the photographic process from start to finish in order to more accurately produce his vision that he wished to communicate through his work. It was around this time that he also discovered his artistic voice – what he wanted to say to the world. Oscar was always very proud of his cultural, its traditions, and wanted to share that with others. He started creating images for his Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) series back in 1994 long before it was popular. For 25 years he exhibited work from this series in galleries and museums around the world. He also traveled internationally teaching about his photography in English and Spanish.

Oscar loved people. He had an innate ability to connect with and understand people, then translate that into a portrait. He loved lighting in the studio and combined those two loves in order to create spectacular portraits that reflected the character of the individual.

During the program, Jessica will talk about the inspiration and what went into the creation of some of Oscar’s images.
